A Vision for Boise State Radio

Preamble

Boise State Radio is an integral part of Boise State University’s outreach strategy.  It exists to further the university’s mission in specific areas of responsibility.  Accordingly, the network strives to blend its values, core beliefs, purpose, mission, and goals with those of the university …

(from Strategic Plan:  Meeting the Challenge) … [excerpted]

With effective implementation of its planning activities, Boise State University will be:

• a major resource for delivery of services to a broad geographical area;

• a leader in the use of technology to deliver and enhance learning.

Boise State University Values and Core Beliefs [excerpted]

Boise State University’s strategic plan is founded on values and beliefs about education …

• That learning never ceases and higher education is but one element of an individual’s life-long learning;

• That the education of its citizens is essential to the nation and the state and that access to education is necessary for a productive society in which citizens help to define and solve the challenges faced by humankind.

Boise State Radio Values and Core Beliefs

• That education need not be constrained by time or place;

• That quality educational, informational, and cultural programming promotes life-long learning and enhances the quality of life for our citizens.

Purpose

Boise State Radio expands the capability of Boise State University to provide distance education and life-long learning.

Mission

Boise State Radio:

• produces and broadcasts quality educational, informational, and cultural programming that entertains as well as informs;

• Develops and implements cost-effective distance learning technologies;

• Provides opportunities for students to work in a professional broadcast environment.

As a result …

 • Boise State University will serve a larger constituency because of the greater access afforded by Boise State Radio — which will result in a better educated, better connected citizenry;

 • Boise State Radio will be recognized as a national leader in the development of new multimedia broadcast engineering technologies;

 • Boise State Radio will be the broadcast version of a “teaching           hospital,” where faculty, professional staff, students, and interns work side-by-side to deliver quality educational broadcast services.

Goals

The strategic goals of Boise State Radio recognize the need to respond to ever-changing technologies, evolving market conditions, and a challenging resource base, while maintaining and improving the quality of existing services and programming, including classical, jazz, and news.  These strategic goals are intended to enhance Boise State Radio’s position in the public broadcast arena, as well as its relationships with its listener base  and Boise State University.  The Board and Staff should endeavor to ensure observance of these goals and consider the costs and benefits of each new step as well as the potential effects on the system as a whole.

These strategic goals, in order of priority, are:

1.           Identify, prioritize, and develop new revenue sources, including opportunities to create national partnerships that maintain and assure Boise State Radio’s economic viability.

Boise State Radio’s first priority is to enhance its funding base through new, innovative revenue sources, including exploration and creation of national partnerships that have the potential of bringing both revenue and recognition to the radio network.  New revenues will ensure economic viability, help hire and retain high quality staff by ensuring competitive compensation and reasonable workload, and ensure independence to pursue Boise State Radio’s mission and goals.

2.            Strengthen Boise State Radio’s capacity as a program producer with greater emphasis on Idaho features and Idaho news.

The development of increased capacity as a program producer, with greater emphasis on Idaho issues, will strengthen Boise State Radio’s relationship with the University, provide better service to an expanded audience, better fill the gap that exists for high quality statewide news and feature reporting, and provide better capability for Boise State Radio to be the voice of Idaho.

3.             Maintain and strengthen Boise State University’s capacities in engineering and applied technology

Maintaining and strengthening the university’s capabilities in engineering and applied technology weds the station’s objectives with the educational mission of Boise State University, enhances opportunities for students, and provides an expanded opportunity to leverage the University’s academic priorities in fulfilling Boise State Radio’s mission.

4.             Pursue new services and expand distribution systems.

Pursuing new services will encourage creative thinking, provide a potential outlet for new artists, and broaden programming to the station’s target audience, while expansion of the network’s distribution systems will enhance the station’s image, expand the market, and provide better opportunities for distance learning.

5.              Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Boise State Radio’s Community Advisory Board.

The Board will provide leadership to Boise State Radio to  cultivate, expand, and utilize its listener base to enhance its service, obtain vital participation from listeners, and ensure a strong foundation of support.  Furthermore, it will maintain and strengthen Boise State Radio’s commitment to community relations through a strategy that incorporates friends’ groups working together with Boise State Radio’s Community Advisory Board. Friends’ groups would consist of members organized locally from throughout the service area.  Finally, the Board will provide the Boise State University administration with an annual report and recommendations.
