Association of Classified Employees Senate MEETING MINUTES Present: Gay Barzee, Theresa Bow, Carol Bugni, Linda Burnett, Carol Carroll, Shelly Doty, Guen Johnson, Jaque Johnson, Denise Ooley, Brenda Ross, Regan Walker, Kenny Wiscombe Guest Speaker: Dr. Mark Rudin, VP for Research Dr. Rudin, who began in the VP position on January 1, 2007, discussed the purpose of the Research Office and how grants are implemented in relation to professional and support staff roles in grants and research. Dr. Rudin discussed the three main areas surrounding the development of a research institution. 1) Develop a research culture on campus. It is important to get everyone on board in becoming a research institution and develop a team atmosphere in that regard. 2) Diversify the institutions research portfolio by expanding partnerships not only within the institution but within the community and beyond. 3) Define who “we”, as the institution, are and promote that image. Dr. Rudin also talked about developing a department within Research that would be a “one stop shopping” type contact for infrastructure questions dealing with grants and research. Dr. Rudin suggested the development of a professional and support staff committee that would address the specifics of the infrastructure being in place to support the various grants and research in order to grow in pace with the University. ACE supported the idea of this type of committee. Salary Guidelines The minimum starting wage at BSU will be moved to $9.00 an hour. The Salary Recommendation Schedule will be going out to department deans this week. President Kustra sent out an email concerning salary guidelines to all personnel. Benefits Fair, May 8 Volunteers are needed to man the booth at the Benefits fair from 10 to 2. Several ACE Senate members will be taking turns. ACE Luncheon Date: Tuesday,
April 3, 2007 Complete the form from the email attachment dated 3/13/07 and send payment to Denise Ooley, Human Resources- MS1265- ext 63433. The photographer has been scheduled. Frames for certificates have been located. ACE has received 12 nominations for the 2007 Outstanding Classified Employee. Shared Leadership Panel Shared Leadership is planning a session for April 17th on the topic Boise State: Past, Present, and Future. Part of the panel discussion will be ways in which employees can be part of BSU’s future and volunteer and be part of different opportunities on campus. ACE was asked to be part of the panel discussion. Kenny Wiscombe and Carol Carroll will be developing information as part of the panel. ACE Classified Employee of the Year A motion was made by Guen Johnson to raise the amount of the gift certificate that is given to the Classified Employee of the Year from $150.00 to $175.00. It was seconded by Carol Carroll. All were in favor. Motion passed and will be put into effect for this year. COMMITTEE REPORTS Homecoming Advisory Committee Homecoming dates under discussion include September 15, 2007 and November 3, 2007. A set date will be forthcoming. The theme for Homecoming is undecided. There will be a student contest in conjunction with the 75th anniversary. Executive Budget Student fees were discussed. Distinguished Speaker The Hans Blix lecture was well received. Dr. Zirinsky escorted Mr. Blix over the weekend, which included the Birds of Prey area. Posters from the Lecture Series will be framed and hung in the SUB. The Lecture Board has been split into a Student Lecture Series and Distinguished Lecture Series. Each board will develop their own speakers. The 1st Distinguished Lecture Series in the fall will deal with the health field. Information will be announced at a later date. Women’s Center Advisory Board Wanda Viento updated the Board on the Women’s History Month activities. The search for the Violence Awareness and Response Coordinator has been reopened. The ideal candidate would have both clinical and advocacy experience. A proposal was presented and a discussion ensued regarding the Women’s Center Advisory Board membership. The proposal will be revised and voted on at the next Advisory Board meeting. The April Advisory Board Meeting was changed from April 3 to April 17 at noon. No charges have been filed in the threat that was made to Wanda Viento. Security was effective during the Vagina Monologues; however, there is still fear and concern that is felt by the Women’s Center staff. Parking Committee There will be a 15% rise in parking permit cost in the fall. NEXT
