Welcome: President Clarkson welcomed the new Senate.
Introductions: Clarkson had the new Senate members introduce themselves and their office.
Set Regular Meeting Dates and Times: The third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 was suggested. Item tabled until the absent members could be contacted by Clarkson via e-mail to see if the time and day works.
Emeritus Criteria: Discussion ensued as to whether additional factors such as level of involvement at BSU during employment or after should be considered in determining whether someone was granted emeritus status. How is distinguished service determined? Wiscombe will research this issue and contact the other senates to see what their procedure is. Item to be discussed at the next meeting.
Committee Reports:
Paint The Town: Wiscombe said that BSU is painting a house of a Mr. Brubaker. Prep work was done Wednesday night June 8 and will be done again Thursday, June 9. There is an adequate number to paint, with WAC students helping. Actual painting of the house will take place Saturday, June 11.
Goodwill Project: Bugni reported that volunteers could serve food at RC Willey as a fund raiser. Two possible dates are December 3 or 10. The Board felt the earlier date was best. The committee is to meet and organize a line-up, and it was suggested that volunteers should work at least a two hour shift or more. Bugni stated the biggest source for fundraising is employees participating in automatic payroll deduction. Charlton stated that Aramark’s contract is up for bid, and she asked that ‘community service’ be included in the contract so we don’t lose that support. Bugni thanked everyone for their support.
Parking: Clarkson stated that parking rates at the West Campus were discussed. Rates had been set at: General - Student $50; Faculty/Staff $79; Reserve - Student $129; Faculty/Staff $149. BSU main campus permits are valid at the West Campus. Another parking garage is under serious discussion. It is very likely that permit rates will be raised, possibly over the next three years to fund the project. Additional discussion and information is expected at the next Parking meeting.
Bookstore: Ross talked about the Capitol Scholars Program. Students who qualified were offered a $1,000 scholarship. The Bookstore donated $500,000 in matching funds toward the Program. An anonymous donor donated $500,000. This is enough for an endowed scholarship fund. Further, the Bookstore gave $6,500 to the Trang Doan Scholarship, and $30,000 to the Graduate Residential Scholars Program to cover housing and stipends for graduate students selected. The NCAA basketball tournament netted $15,951, which was split between the Bookstore and Athletics. Total assets reported in March by the Bookstore - three million dollars.
Committee Assignments: Clarkson distributed committee lists for board members to sign up. Discussion ensued about what some of the committees do. Some assignments were made, the rest will be filled in at next meeting when more board members are present.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
