Association of Classified Employees Senate

Thursday, December 15, 2005

Cataldo Room, Student Union

PRESENT:  Carol Bugni, Denise Ooley, Regan Walker, Cathy Hampton, Gay Barzee, Connie Charlton, Carol Carroll, Theresa Bow, Brenda Ross, Ann Winslow.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS:

Acting President Hampton called the meeting to order at 10:50 a.m.  Approval of minutes of the previous meeting were tabled until a quorum of members arrived.  Hampton introduced a guest, Jane Buser, director of Human Resource Services, who discussed legislative issues.  Ms. Buser first asked for input from the ACE Senate regarding the annual fall luncheon and whether we want any changes in it or would like to leave it in the same format.  The general feeling of the group was that the luncheon is very well received and doesn't need any changes.

She described meetings with legislators over the past months in an effort to change how they do compensation.  She feels they have made some significant changes in employee compensation, including development of a pay philosophy, bonuses, retainment of staff and faculty, geographic differential, and a plan to move staff to policy, after which further raises will be made through pay for performance.  On Wednesday, January 11, the Interim Committee, chaired by Sen. Andreason, will present the report to JFAC leadership.  Following that, the CEC will schedule a meeting to consider the changes put forward.  Ms. Buser feels confident that a number of those will become law, the first significant changes since the Hay was implemented many years ago.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

  • Campus Climate:  Barzee reported the Climate Survey received a good percentage of responses, but only 3% were received from students.  Data is being compiled and the report should be out the first of February.  When asked for comments on the survey, members responded that the survey tool needs an overall comments section.  Another survey will be produced and sent out based on the results of this one.
  • Emeriti:   Bugni distributed information on an applicant for emeriti status.  Following review, a motion was made (Charlton) and  seconded (Ooley) to approve the candidate's application.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.  Names are confidential until emeritus status is announced at the next lunch meeting of classified employees.
  • Good Will:  Bugni applauded Garrett's excellent job of scheduling all the volunteers who grilled hot dogs at RC Willey Furniture Store.  Their hard work earned a $200 check from RC Willey for the Good Will fund.
  • Human Resource Advisory Committee:  Bugni attended the meeting of this committee on behalf of Cathy Hampton.

Hampton will email the minutes from the HR meeting to Senate members.

  • Women's Center:  Bugni discussed the Rape Prevention line -- they are unable to find anyone to man the line.  The new coordinator of the Women's Center will be in place by February 1st.

SPRING SEMESTER MEETING DATES:

The current meeting time of 10:45 a.m. does not work for some senators; therefore, after consideration by the Senate, the consensus was to meet at 2:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, 2 - 3:00 p.m. in the Ah Fong Room at the SUB.  See the following page for the 2006 spring semester meetings schedule.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF ASSOCIATION SENATE:

President Mike Esposito sent a memo on behalf of the PSA Senate.  He wrote:  1) The Brown Bag Luncheon held with the professional, classified, and faculty senates was a success, so the PSA Senate proposed another on March 1 at noon, meeting room to be announced.  2) The PSA senators would like to visit a Classified Senate meeting to observe how it functions.  Esposito asked that a list of the meeting dates be sent to him so their senators can choose a date to attend individually.  He invited classified senators to do the same. The PSA Senate meets at 9 am in the SUB on January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, and June 7.   Esposito's suggestions were well received.

ADJOURNMENT:  A motion to adjourn the meeting was made (Ross), seconded (Walker), and approved by unanimous vote.  Acting President Hampton adjourned the meeting at 10:47 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Ann Winslow, Secretary
