Association of Classified Employees

March 10, 2005

Present:  Julie Clarkson, Rita Nuxoll, Connie Charlton, Lisa Clements, Rex Hadley, Bonnie Killian, Cindy Bancroft-Stigall, Denise Ooley, Brenda Ross, Valencia Garrett, Kenny Wiscombe, Mike Dome, Carol Carroll.

Approve February Minutes:  Julie distributed a draft of the February minutes for review and correction.  Wiscombe moved and Dome seconded that the minutes be approved with corrections.  The motion carried.

Outstanding Classified Employee:  Julie sent out the nomination forms; as of today’s date, only 3 nominations have been received.  Julie asked the Senate to talk up the award in their respective areas.  The Senate discussed the criterion relating to longevity.  It was moved, seconded and carried to leave the criterion at 5 years of service (and not change it to 3 as was recommended). The award for the Outstanding Classified Employee (OCE) will be brought in line with the award received by professional staff: a $150 gift certificate or a 1 year reserve parking permit.  These are subject to tax.  The Senate unanimously passed a motion by Kenny Wiscombe, seconded by Mike Dome, to clarify that if the Vice President of ACE chairs the OCE process, s/he will be ineligible for nomination.

General Meeting and Luncheon:  Valencia reported that the committee would be meeting later today to finalize plans.  Three menu options will be available.  The event is scheduled for April 14, 11:30 – 1:30 in the Jordan D Ballroom. Stacy Pearson will be the guest speaker.  Release time has been granted by President Kustra.

Nominations:  Rita has sent out the request for nominations of new officers and senators; they are due back to her by March 18. She emphasized that before someone is placed on the ballot, it should be confirmed that the person is willing to run for office.  Connie will contact Keith Hasselquist, Director of Internal Audit about counting the ballots and invite him to be a guest of ACE at the General Meeting and Luncheon.

Committee Reports:

  • Goodwill Fund Raising:  The “Spring Clean” event is canceled.  Dr. Andrews had concerns about its appropriateness. Three other fund raising ideas were described and discussed.  These will be investigated further by the committee and recommendations for which we may want to pursue will be made at a future meeting.
  • Executive Budget Committee: Kenny related that the Committee had made its recommendations to the president; tuition vs. fees was discussed.
  • Distinguished Lecture Series:  All arrangements are finalized for Christopher Hogwood’s presentation on March 15.  He is an internationally acclaimed conductor and the founder of the Academy of Ancient Music.
  • Paint the Town:  An announcement about Paint the Town will be made at the General Meeting and Luncheon on April 14.
  • Emeritus: Several applications are in the works.
  • Recreation Governance Board:  Carol reported that the Board has met and decided to dissolve the child care area in the Rec Center.  The Board is considering the Child Care Center or the SUB as a location for child care facility.
