Service Employees International Union representative
Jeff Olson recapped the legislative year stating though HB 329 passed making it
law that organization dues automatically deducted from public employee’s pay
cannot be used for political purposes, later legislation was signed into law
(5-7-03) rescinding most of those restrictions. A bonus bill was passed (SB 1130) allowing agencies to
award bonuses up to $1,000 for ideas which result in cost savings or greater
efficiencies. Agencies are not required
to do this as this is called 'permissive' legislation. Workers Memorial Day (April
28) was a success and will be expanded next year to include a film festival at
the Flicks. This summer groups of SEIU members will be organized to meet with
legislators.
