Association of Classified Employees
October 10, 2002
Present: Rita Nuxoll, Connie Charlton, Reida Bow,
Rhonda Hughes, Gary Myers, and Bob Webber.
Guests: Jeff Olson, Dylan McDonald
- Jeff Olson, an
organizer with the Service Employees International Union Local 687(SEIU)
distributed information about the union, a recent news article about
recruitment efforts in Pocatello, and SEIU Local 687 2002 Voters’
Guide. In addition, he talked
about the benefits of joining a union and answered specific questions from
ACE members. Classified staff have
the ability to attend informational meetings with staff from SEIU 687 as
advertised by email, or can get their questions answered by contacting
Jeff Olson or Andrew Hanhard by phone at 343-1038. Dues are $17 per month and can be paid
through payroll deduction.
- Parking at events: Gary Myers led a discussion about some
of the general parking areas that are being blocked off for BSU athletic
events. Gary will email the ACE
representative on the Parking Committee, Reida Bow, for her to take
forward to a Parking Committee meeting.
- BSUAOP: This item tabled owing to the absence
of a BSUAOP spokesperson.
- Supervisor
evaluation: Rita Nuxoll prefaced
the discussion on this topic by relating that supervisor evaluation was
indicated as an area of strong interest by classified staff responding to
a survey taken in 2000. She
introduced Dylan McDonald from Albertsons Library who has had some
previous experience with an evaluation instrument. He handed out an evaluation document
that has been developed and used at a city agency. Aspects of using a supervisor
evaluation were viewed as largely positive by the ACE senate. This topic will be reintroduced when a
larger number of ACE representatives are present and a course of action
will be discussed.
- Feedback from the ACE
Open House: Tabled until next meeting.
- President’s Cabinet: No
report; President’s Cabinet meeting rescheduled to next Monday, October
14.
- Search Committee: Charlton related that she, Rita Nuxoll
and other classified staff have expressed their disappointment in letters
to the State Board members who are overseeing the Search Committee for not
including a representative from the classified and professional staff
constituency groups.
- Lunchtime training for
classified staff: Tabled until more members present.
- Committee Reports:
- Food Service: Gary Myers reported that the Food Service
Committee met on October 8. New
General Manager Jay Hays was introduced.
Food service will provide concessions at the Wayne Newton and Goo
Goo Dolls events. Profits have
increased from the sale of concessions.
Catering has experienced a lot of employee turnover. Promotions include Spanish History and
Steak Nights on October 15 and 17, respectively. Food service will expand in Health Sciences Riverside and
Canyon County Center. The committee will meet again on November 21.
- Distinguished Lecture
Series: Lech Walesa, former
President of Poland, spoke on “Solidarity: The New Millennium” on October
9, 2002. Walesa won a Nobel Prize
for Peace in 1983. The turnout was
larger than usual; therefore, the event was held in the Pavilion. The Committee is finalizing plans for
bringing Laurie Garrett, winner of Pulitzer, Polk and Peabody awards in
journalism, to the campus on April 17, 2003.
Respectfully
submitted:
