Absent: Valencia Garrett
Guests: Lynn
Russell, Carol Martin, Presidential Search Committee members
President Charlton introduced Dr. Lynn Russell and
Dr. Carol Martin, the two BSU employees selected to represent all BSU
employees as committee members on the Presidential Screening Committee. Chris
Matthias, President of ASBSU, was unable to attend. Russell and Martin reviewed
the search process and progress. Martin stated that the committee would be
setting up open hearings for anyone on campus to come and talk with the
candidates. January 6th is the deadline for applications with
the position to be filled by the end of June. Russell and Martin asked the ACE
board members for questions and input on what qualities a good president needs
to possess. Some qualities mentioned were: dynamic speaker, great listener,
communicator, activist and advocate for the school, ability to work in several
venues (i.e., legislative, foundation, community), visibility on campus,
ability to empower employees, solid in academics and administrative functions,
business skills, personable. Martin said information on the process will be
posted regularly on the website: www.Idahoboardofed.org/pressearch.asp.
Martin suggested that it might be good to have representatives go to
candidates’ current campuses to check references in person.
The recent ACE open house was not well
attended. The question was raised
whether we want to continue and whether it’s worth the money if few people are
attending. The same people attend every year, but the idea is to get a broader
constituency to attend and become aware of ACE. Discussion included canceling the event, or having it on an every-other
year or every three-year basis. Part of the purpose is for employees to meet
the ACE officers. Bow suggested officers can do things in their areas. Wiscombe
suggested putting pictures of officers in the Arbiter periodically so employees
can recognize the members. A suggestion was made to get lists of employees and
divide them by region in order to e-mail notices of upcoming events. Item
tabled until December meeting.
Nuxoll distributed a form used by Boise City that
allows employees to give feedback on their supervisors and suggested BSU do
something along these lines. Once all input has been reviewed and approved by the ACE Senate, the ACE executive
committee will meet with Jane Buser to discuss the proposal. Senate members were asked to look over the
form and be prepared to discuss it at the next meeting.
Charlton distributed a schedule of BSUAOP events for
Garrett. Rountree announced the Holiday Auction to the committee and reminded
them to get their reservations in by Thursday, November 14, 2002.
5. Noontime training for classified staff
(open discussion)
Charlton heard from one classified staff who
expressed concern that training is often offered during lunchtime. Some employees attend the noon training,
then take a lunch hour afterwards. Some do not have the flexibility in the
offices, often being the sole office support person. No further action will take place on this item unless additional
concerns are received. It is believed
that the Training and Development office surveyed staff and set the training
schedule according to what the majority of employees support.
6. President’s
Cabinet
At the October President’s Cabinet meeting, the
academic calendar and the Five Year Academic rolling calendar were
approved. Results of the survey
regarding Summer 2003 schedule was shared.
The results were positive, and thus, the summer hours for 2003 will be
as they were for summer 2002. The
winter 2002 holiday was presented for review and information; it had been
previously approved in February 2002.
7. Committee
reports
Committee reports were tabled until the next meeting
due to the length of the meeting.
8. Other
No other business was raised at the meeting.
The
meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Respectfully
Submitted, Gueneth Omeron Johnson
