President
Rita Nuxoll called the meeting to order in the Student Union Boyington Room.
The meeting was moved up one week to discuss urgent business, and takes the
place of the March meeting.
1) Recommendation on
raises: The ACE Senate has been
asked for its recommendation on how to distribute money approved for salary
increases. This recommendation will
be taken into consideration when formulating Boise State’s guideline for
raises. Several options for recommendations were discussed, including giving a
3.5% increase across-the-board to all who meet expectations, with a 1%
pay-for-performance pool. Most senators stated that classified employees across
campus have expressed the need for as large a cost of living increase as
possible. Kenny Wiscombe made a motion and Lois Santillanes seconded it, that
the highest percentage allowable (4.5%) across-the-board be recommended. The motion passed. Since our mission is to
represent what our constituency wants, this is the recommendation that will be
sent to Dr. Jones. The ACE Executive Board will follow up on this at a meeting
with the President’s Executive Board March 5.
2) Luncheon update: The spring luncheon will be held April 17. Kenny made a motion and Reida Bow seconded
it, to charge $2.00 per person for the luncheon. The motion passed. The
committee will select the speaker and menu.
3) Committee reports:
Parking (Julie Clarkson): Parking rates will increase this coming year. An estimated additional $425,000 yearly will
be needed to build and pay for the second parking garage which is scheduled for
construction beginning in 2002. Three
proposals were presented to the Parking Committee (two by parking Services and
one by a committee member). None
received a majority vote. At least two
of the proposals will be forwarded on to President’s Cabinet, one as the
recommendation of Parking Services and the one that received the most votes by
the committee. Proposed increases vary
on each proposal and may be up to 35% for next year.
Recreation Board of
Governors (Merrylea Hiemstra): Due to poor
representation of students on the Board currently, the current Chair of the
committee plans to bring a proposal to the next meeting to change the process of
appointing students to the Board so that the Recreation Center Director and
Board of Governance student chair make the appointments. The Rec Center will be completed August 1,
2001, with a grand opening on Saturday, October 13, in conjunction with Homecoming. Current fees for all employees to use campus
recreation facilities are $16/sem. or $52/yr.
The proposed fee to use the Recreation Center and all other recreation
facilities on campus is $200/yr. Alumni
will pay $300/yr. A family pass will be
available and child care provided at the center. Some of the recreational activities that will be available at the
new recreational center are racquetball, basketball, aerobics, a climbing wall,
and a weight room.
Bookstore (Connie Charlton): . Student
Union Director Leah Barrett made a presentation on the proposed
expansion/remodel of the Student Union.
With SUB expansion, the Bookstore will have more space and a storefront
on the south end of the building. Further
presentations are being made to other campus entities, and the final proposal
goes to the State Board of Education in March.
Women’s Center (Ann
Winslow): March is Women’s History Month with a full
slate of activities planned. The first
week of March, a full color magazine will be inserted in the Arbiter and the
Boise Weekly. It will feature stories
about the 34 women who were nominated as Idaho “Women Making History”. Attendance numbers are nearing 100 for the
reception for Women Making History on Friday, March 2nd. The Rosalie Sorrels and the Boise Divas
concert on March 5th is expected to sell out, and great interest
has been shown in the other exciting events on the calendar.
Next meeting: Wednesday, April 4, Student Union Senate
Forum. Meetings are open to all
classified employees.
